As it's a couple of weeks before World Book Day, to get into the spirit, we’re going to share 10 Fun Facts about your Favourite Dragon, Zog!
If you’re not familiar with the friendly dragon, Zog is an orange, clumsy, loveable dragon who dreams of earning a gold star at his Dragon School. However, he never does get a gold star until he meets a kind, young girl who helps the young dragon finally reach his goal. Zog then returns in Zog, and the Flying Doctors, where he goes round with his new friends, travelling far and wide to help creatures in need of their medical care.
- Zog is the biggest and keenest dragon at Dragon School, he is the most eager to learn new skills like fire breathing, flying and roaring, even if things don’t go to plan.
- The idea for the main storyline of Zog was from the creation of Madame Dragon, which inspired Julia to create the Dragon School, which we know and love.
- Julia wasn’t originally going to write a sequel to Zog, but due to the open ending and popular demand, she decided to explore what Zog and the Flying Doctor Team would get up to next.
- Zog, the book is 16 years old this year!
On the 15th Anniversary there was a nationwide Zog Day that was held on the 12th June. The Royal Mint released a 50p Zog coin, and Warwick Castle held a birthday party for the beloved dragon. - Both Zog and Zog and the Flying Doctors have generated over 30 million views on BBC iPlayer and were sold to more than 100 territories globally, making Zog a huge TV success.
- Zog is returning to our screens with a new animated series consisting of 52 short episodes, which will follow the trio helping creatures of all sizes, with jokes, adventures, and a theme about caring for yourself, others and the world around you. The series will be airing in the spring.
- In 2020, Axel Scheffler drew the Flying Doctor Crew wearing protective gear and giving aid to animals to help kids understand what was happening in the world around them.

- Axel Scheffler really enjoys adding little details to his drawings for your little ones to find, like the blue dragon drawing in the sand or the green dragon playing with a dragonfly at Dragon School.
Make sure to keep an eye out for any surprises in Axel Scheffler and Julia Donaldson’s books! - Axel experimented with many variations of Zog, including him being on all fours, a different colour, a longer and thinner dragon, spikes in different places and different snouts like this crocodile snout.

- Axel chose the vibrant orange colour we know today due to previously drawing a green and red dragon in his previous books, and Zog’s vibrant colour makes him stand out more against the background scene.
I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about our favourite loveable dragon and his medical crew!
