Roarsome Facts About the Dinosaurs on our Personalised Kids’ T-Shirt
This week's theme is dinosaurs in our weekly newsletter, so let's have a look at some fun facts about the dinosaurs on our Personalised Person Dinosaur T-shirt.
Egg
- All dinosaurs hatch from an egg and can produce 20 eggs at a time. This means that most of a dinosaur's development can be done outside of the mother’s body so that the mother can conserve precious resources for egg laying and survival.
- 9 out of 10 dinosaur eggs never hatched, which means that there would have been around 10%-20% chance that dinosaur eggs wouldn’t hatch. This would be due to predators eating the undefended eggs, or if the egg did get the chance to hatch it the small dinosaur would most likely be eaten.
Triceratops
- Triceratops are slow-moving herbivores that have a horn beak, shearing teeth and three horns.
- Triceratops means three horned face in Greek. The horns are thought to be used in duelling, while the neck frill is seen as a source of protection.
Stegosaurus
- The stegosaurus had flat scales that ran down its back. These plates are thought to help control the dinosaur's temperature or to make it look fierce towards other predators. There were also flat scales on its tail to help defend itself when it’s in danger.
- In comparison to its body, the stegosaurus has really small feet, this however is still really large. Palaeontologists can look at fossilised footprints to find out the dinosaur's speed and behaviour.
Pterodactyl
- Pterodactyls are not classified as dinosaurs; they are part of a group of flying reptiles called pterosaurs! They have wings made of skin and muscle, which could span about 30 feet wide.
- They most likely ate insects and molluscs; they also eat fish, but possibly only in their late evolutionary stages.
Tyrannosaurus Rex
- Tyrannosaurus Rex comes from the Greek and Latin words meaning Tyrant Lizard King
- The T-rex was a really smart dinosaur, with a brain twice as big as that of other carnivores. This is, however, due to the size of the dinosaur being 6m tall and 12m long!
