What is the Big Garden Bird Watch?

The Big Garden Bird Watch is an annual event that gets hundreds and thousands of nature lovers to help build a picture of how garden birds are doing within the UK. It’s also the largest garden Wildlife survey in the world!

This year, it will be hosted by the RSPB between

23rd and 25th January 2026

This is a great activity for you and your little one to have a go at bird watching. It’s only for one hour, you record the different types of birds and how many land in your patch, this can be at a park or in your garden.

What were last year's results?

Last year, 590,000 people took part and counted 9.1 million birds. The top bird was the House Sparrow with 1,211,260 birds however, they are down 60% since the first birdwatch in 1979! There have been 38 million birds lost since 1979, making it so important that we take part in this survey.
