Printed Socks Dye Transfer
What Is Dye Transfer?
If you’ve ever noticed colour rubbing off your clothing onto your skin, shoes, or lighter clothing, you’re not alone. Dye transfer can happen with printed fabric, especially those with bold, dark, or highly saturated colours.
This is most common when clothing is brand new. Printed designs often use concentrated pigments to achieve vibrant colours, and some excess dye can remain on the surface of the fabric at first.
How to Prevent Dye Transfer
Here are a few easy ways to minimise dye transfer:
- Washing the socks before the first wear is always recommended for all colours but especially dark or vibrant colours. Turning socks inside out before washing helps to keep socks at their best and washing as per the care instructions before wear is recommended
- Avoid using fabric softener as they can sometimes cause any excess dye to remain on the items during the wash
- If any socks appear to still have excess dye on them please rewash them and tumble dry as previously stated
- Avoid wearing them with light shoes or fabrics at first, especially if there is a possibility of the socks getting damp
What Causes Dye Transfer?
During a printing and dyeing process, clothing is treated with rich disperse inks/dyes to create detailed patterns and vivid colours. Dyeing and printing are complex processes and our team follow standardised processes to ensure that as much of the dye as possible leaves the socks before shipping. In shipping and storage, some dye can transfer from the centre of the fibre to the outer layer of the fibre, this is called diffusion. Unfortunately, this is a chemical characteristic of the inks/dyes used, and the items may exhibit excess or loose dye due to shipping or storage. It can happen with all clothing from all retailers.
Common Items at Risk for Dye Transfer
To help you protect your belongings, here are the items most likely to pick up dye from printed socks:
- The inside of shoes or insoles, especially when light in colour.
- Bare feet or skin
- Clothing worn near or may come into contact with socks.
- Light-coloured bedding or upholstery
What if My Socks Stain Something?
If dye transfer occurs, try these tips:
- Skin: Wash with soap and warm water — dye will typically come off easily.
- Clothing: Launder the item promptly before the dye sets.
- Shoes or insoles: Use a cleaner suitable for the material (canvas, leather, etc.).
Is This a Defect?
No, as stated, due to the diffusion principle, some ink/dye can move from the centre of the fibre to the outside meaning that there is excess dye at that point. It can happen to all clothing from all suppliers.
Our Policy on Dye Transfer
Our policy on dye transfer is simple, if you experience it but follow our steps this will minimise any issues. We, at Roy’s Boys, conduct a battery of testing to ensure that our clothing is fit for use, we use the latest techniques in manufacture and ensure our supply chain is legally compliant with UK REACh and EU REACh which are the legal chemical requirements for both the UK & EU. If any staining does occur onto any other item, please contact our customer services team, who will be happy to talk this through with you
